DREAMS BECOME REALITY FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH A DISABILITY

The three lucky dream recipients of the Dreamfit Foundation’s 2010 “Dreamcatcher” Program will see their dreams turned to reality as the nine prototypes of their recreation equipment are unveiled across Perth from Friday 26th November 2010.

Nine teams of UWA Engineering students, supported by engineering industry mentors and sponsors, will present their Dream solutions with a raft of activities involving teams, Dream recipients and sponsors’ staff.

Celebrations will commence with a ‘water sit-ski’ experience afternoon at the WA Disabled Water Ski Association’s home in Burswood.

All nine projects will then be on display in key CBD, Northbridge, Henderson and Canningvale locations.

Activities are designed as a lead up to International Day of People with a Disability on Friday 3rd December and the much anticipated Dreamcatcher Awards at the Westcare Breakfast on Monday 6th December at the Burswood Grand Ballroom.

“The nine Dreamcatcher teams have been working hard all year to design, build and test their Dream solutions including the sit skis, modified gym equipment and independent art easel stations,” said Darren Lomman CEO Dreamfit Foundation.

“We are thrilled to have some of WA’s leading engineering firms involved with the project, not just as financial sponsors but having their staff involved as mentors to the UWA engineering students,” states Mr Lomman. “Our thanks go out to Apache Energy, Arup, Camco Engineering, Cliffs, Hatch, Raytheon, SKM and two of Wood Group’s businesses for their generous and enthusiastic approach to our program.”

The three recipients, Sladjana Mijailovic, Imran Ariff and Karen Anderson, represent a wide range of leisure and recreation interests across the West Australian disability sector.

Sladjana is a delightful 12 year old girl whose dream is to be able to paint and draw by herself, something her meningitis induced quadriplegia doesn’t allow.

Imran is a highly independent young man with cerebral palsy, who dreams of being able to complete a gym workout on his own. Imran’s workout at his local gym, strengthens his mind, body and soul and is an important part of integration into the community.

Karen is an avid water skier and mother. Living with cerebral palsy, she is passionate about sharing her experiences and sense of freedom on the water with other people living with disabilities.

The engineering community and general public are invited to visit various displays set up around Perth, Northbridge and Henderson to see first hand the amazing work completed by the Dreamcatcher teams.
