For most parents, letting their child ride a bike in the backyard, or playing with friends is a given, not a dream. Josiah’s parents Henri and Marika, have just discovered what this feels like to have this dream come true.
Josiah was born with no arms so riding a traditional bicycle is impossible. Late in 2008, Josiah’s mum Marika called Dreamfit Foundation CEO Darren Lomman for help. Marika wanted to know if there was anything that Dreamfit’s volunteer engineers could do to make Josiah’s dream of riding a bicycle a reality.
It’s been six months since Josiah chose the winning design for his bike from Josiah’s Bicycle Engineering Challenge. In these six months, Josiah and his family have discovered a freedom that all little boys should be able to experience, and this was made possible thanks to the Dreamfit Foundation.
“When he rides it, he has full independence and does not need any 'help'” explains Josiah’s mum Marika.
For the first time in his life, Josiah feels comfortable enough to jump on his very own bike and ride around on his own, around the block or down to the river with his sister and cousin. He doesn’t feel left out anymore!
In the past Josiah’s parents would need to help and assist him to do these sorts of activities. How much fun is that for a little boy?
“Also, as parents, we feel comfortable sending him out on his own, knowing that he is safe and able. Quite often on the weekend, he will go for a good ride with (his dad) Henri along the river.” Marika says happily.
Not only does the Dreamfit bicycle give Josiah and his family a sense of freedom, safety and fun, but it has opened up a whole world of fitness for him. This is something that is so important in the development of young bodies, especially for the formation of bones and instilling a healthy mind and lifestyle.
Marika, Josiah’s mum, says “he never really exercised much before he got the bike, so we are really happy that he can and wants to now.”
The Kappert are now able to do the things most take for granted, without the challenges and heartache they used to face.
“When we go on picnics, we are able to bring the bike along, so that he can 'hoon’ around on it. This is great for him, as most playgrounds are not suitable for him because of the ladders and climbing structures...” Marika says happily.
The Dreamcatcher bicycle has brought joy to Josiah and his family and allowed Josiah to be outgoing and join in with general activity with his peers. When asked about his bike Josiah says he “loves the bike, thinks it’s very cool and works fantastic”.
“Josiah, Henri and I are very thankful for the bike. It is a real blessing to him” says Marika.
