Design Challenge: Students will be asked to convert traditional windsurfing equipment into a specially designed device that can be used on land. While this sport. known as land sailing or land yachting, does currently exist, it is only arelatively new development and at the current time there are no options for people with disabilities. Students will therefore be challenged to develop a product that can be used by people with a range of disabilities and mobility limitations. Having access to this type of equipment will increase opportunities for participation and help fulfil the dreams of those people who have a need for speed or who want to feel the wind in their hair!
Following on from the original concepts and designs, two Land Sailing teams were chosen to develop a set of land yachts capable of being operated by people with a range of disabilities including Quadriplegia and Paraplegia.
The Quadriplegic Land Sailing team sponsored by Wood Group IM designed and manufactured a yacht suitable for use by people with high support disabilities. The yacht features a joystick controlled steering system and two support seats to allow the driver to operate the yacht with the assistance of a passenger or carer.
The Paraplegic Land Sailing Team sponsored by Wood Group Kenny designed and manufactured a two person land yacht with fibreglass seating and an adjustable steering system to allow easy access into the vehicle which can be independently operated by the driver.
