2010 Dreamcatcher Sit Ski Project

Karen Anderson lives with Cerebral Palsy. But that doesn't stop her from enjoying the things she loves...

Dream summary: Karen would love to share her passion and experiences with other people living with a disability, in a way that is fun, independent and easy and doesn’t require an overt amount of additional assistance.

Dream details: Karen is able to fulfil her love of water sport through the West Australian Disabled Water Ski Club. She currently uses a sit ski that is made in a way that is difficult to use without assistance. Being able to have independence and therefore sharing her love of water skiing with other disabled people in a way that is easy and not intimidating for first time users.

Design Challenge: The current sit ski is made from 14mm marine ply with marine ply out-riggers and a heavy-duty frame. Two people are currently needed to get the ski in a boat. Starting and

standing up without help is made difficult due to the ski not being very buoyant.

The club provides people living with a disability the opportunity to experience all levels of water skiing from introductory rides in a biscuit through to world championship levels. The club currently has a heavy and antiquated sit ski designed for introductory level water ski experiences that is in desperate need of replacement. The club meets weekly over the summer months on the
Perth foreshore to share their love of water skiing with the local community. Over 700 school students with intellectual disabilities also benefit from the clubs operations through annual school outings.
